Our Approach to Home Renovations
Professional Interior Designer Rebecca Coulby believes that attention to detail is really important and recognises that embarking on a large-scale complicated project like a home renovation can be daunting. Not least because there is so much to be considered from design, organising tradesmen, applying for planning approval, structural surveys and building controls submissions. Coulby Interiors provides a complete service that takes care all of these aspects, leaving our client’s to enjoy the process.
Complete House renovation, Norwich, Norfolk
Our clients were both newly retired and keen to enjoy their home to the maximum. The project was to completely redecorate the house, including new flooring throughout, a new bathroom and ensuite design, bedrooms, lounge and a new kitchen with an eating area. The garage was also to be converted into a utility with a downstairs toilet.
Rebecca recalls, ‘Our clients on this project were really enjoyable to work with. They were keen and excited to be involved every step of the way. The work had to be completed whilst they were living in the property and so myself and the team worked hard to ensure they were as comfortable as possible throughout the process. We were all keen to keep it as stress-free as possible for them. My clients had clear ideas on the overall colour scheme and look. It was designed to be as classic as possible with any bold colours being introduced through accessories that could be changed at a later date if required without great expense. The finished look was a real transformation and created a real light, and classic yet modern overall look. The kitchen design was modern and included fully integrated appliances. I borrowed some space from the under stairs cupboard to create a pantry with the door flush to the wall. This maximised storage but also allowed me the extra space to create a breakfast bar seating area. My client told me she was absolutely delighted with the finished result.’
House Renovation, Martham, Norfolk
This house renovation in Norfolk was to be completed prior to our clients moving back to their home having been abroad for over 8 years. The house had been rented out in that time and required a semi-renovation. The project involved a new kitchen design to create an open plan kitchen diner which included the removal of a supporting brick archway, a new lounge design including the installation of a new corner wood burner, the restoration of a parquet wooden floor, curtains and furniture, a new staircase, flooring and decoration throughout the downstairs as well as a new bathroom design to create a shower and bespoke vanity unit in the downstairs toilet.
Rebecca recalls, ‘When my client contacted me limited time before he was due to return with his family from abroad. Therefore the initial consultation, design work and presentation had to be completed as quickly as possible in order to meet these timescales. From the date the work started everything had to be completed within 8 weeks. My client was keen what he spent on the renovation was returned through an increase of the property valuation. My client and his family had not been looking forward to moving back into their UK home and I was determined that through my design and renovation they returned to a home they could be proud of.
The kitchen and downstairs bathroom design both required modernising. I was able to continue the use of certain materials such as the beautiful walnut through into the kitchen by way of solid walnut worktops and kitchen table (Read more about this and this and other kitchen projects).
The downstairs bathroom needed completely re-designing and here I was able to create a large recessed and bespoke basin and vanity unit for extra storage. Adding an additional shower downstairs has without doubt added value to the property (Read more about this and this and other bathroom projects)
The lounge project was a big transformation. I procured and installed with the fully wireless TV, Sky, DVD and sound system and a stunning modern corner wood burner as a central feature. The overall look was to reflect the family’s international lifestyle and eclectic, richly coloured pieces they have collected over the years such as a beautiful red Asian rug and ethnic oil paintings by their talented daughter. The restored parquet flooring and walnut furniture provided a beautiful and classic background for these pieces.
This project was perhaps one of my most difficult in terms of the logistics, tight timescales and communicating with my clients who were mainly abroad and in different time zones. However this was also one of the most rewarding as the transformation was so great. It was fabulous to meet with them on their arrival and see their positive reactions to their newly renovated home.’
Barn Conversion Renovation, North Norfolk
This renovation project was a barn conversion in North Norfolk that our clients had purchased as a second home from as they are permanently based in London. They therefore were not on site often and needed a company that could arrange all aspects of the renovation. The project involved structural oak beam work as the current beams were not providing proper support, a new kitchen design and installation, a new bathroom design and two ensuites, decorating and new flooring throughout and all new made to measure curtains.
Rebecca recalls, ‘I enjoyed this project immensely as I was able to manage the overall budget which meant I could design all the bathrooms and bedrooms colour schemes holistically. As my clients weren’t in the area or indeed country for much of the time the work was being completed, it required a real hands-on role approach. I was on site the same day my clients obtained the keys to their new house to begin the design work and I was also there to welcome them when they moved in after our work was completed on time and on budget and all ready for them.
Luckily, towards the beginning of the project my team noticed that the exposed oak beams in the lounge were not providing correct structural support so with the assistance of my structural engineer we were able to quickly design new beams, have them made and installed and organise for building controls to visit and certify the work, all at the same time as the other work was being completed so that no time was lost and the building was made safe, all with our clients off site.
My client wanted a traditional kitchen design that centred around her new Aga, but also had a few modern twists such as long door handles and glass splashbacks. When she saw her new kitchen she told me; ‘Rebecca you have given me my dream kitchen!'
